Firefighter LODD – Onondaga County

Details are still emerging, but initial reports are that a firefighter  died  last night  in the Borodino / Spafford area of Onondaga County.  As more information is released, updates will be posted.
It is with deep regret that we pass on to you initial details regarding yesterdays Line of Duty Death of Borodino (Onondaga County, NY) Firefighter Gerard Marcheterre.
Initial reports are that FF MArcheterre was on the apparatus, responding to a structural collapse in the nearby Spafford FD’s response area. While responding, FF Marcheterre was having difficulty breathing. They relayed this information to fire dispatch via cell phone because there isn’t a mobile radio installed in the rescue pumper-as the county is apparently transitioning radio systems. They requested an ambulance meet them at Spaffords firehouse. A few minutes later they arrived and Spafford’s firehouse advised Onondoga County Fire Dispatch to have EMS to expedite as it was now a full arrest. As always, our sincere condolences to all affected.

Issues with Fire Department transition – Canandaigua

The city’s plan to transition its fire department from a mostly career to a mostly volunteer force continues to have repercussions — ones that some say are endangering public safety.

A training session that was to be held this week to get a dozen volunteers certified to drive the city of Canandaigua’s fleet of fire trucks was called off, and officials allege the New York State Professional Fire Fighters Association is behind the last-minute cancellation.  MPNNews Article
