On the evening August 28, 2009 the Ontario County Emergency Management Office facilitated a Full Scale Exercise at the Finger Lakes Community College. Participants included the Finger Lakes Community College Staff & Campus Safety, Ontario County Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team, Hopewell Fire Department and Wayne County DECON Team. The exercise simulated two students that combined two chemicals resulting in a minor explosion within the science lab classroom. The Haz Mat Team entered the campus with Level B personal protective equipment assessed the situation, packaged and extricated the victims and used meters to identify the chemicals involved. The Haz Mat Team was able to evaluate a piece of equipment used for identification of chemicals in the exercise from AHURA Scientific a manufacturer in Massachusetts. One of the victims and several members of the Haz Mat and DECON Teams went through a 9 step technical DECON process.
