Structure Fire – Manchester

The Manchester and Shortsville (automatic mutual aid) Fire Departments were dispatched this afternoon to State Route 21 for a reported structure fire.  While enroute, command requested the Port Gibson and Clifton Springs Fire Department be put on stand by in their quarters.  Command went on located with a report of smoke from the chimney. 

Command with an update reported fire in the structure and called a working fire.  Mutual aid from Port Gibson, Clifton Springs, Palmyra, and Farmington Fire Departments responded to the scene, with various other department covering empty station.  The fire was called under control in 1 hour.  The American Red Cross was requested to the scene, and no injuries were reported.   1. I have looked at the pictures taken from this fire. I am wondering why the incident commander or the safety officer ( if you even had one ) would allow the firefighter on the roof to be cutting a hole without the protection of being on a roof ladder. We preach safety first, but only when we want to. Folks, we killed over a 100 brothers and sisters a year! Why take the risks, follow the rules of safety and do the right thing!
