Structure Fire – Phelps
Posted on January 31st, 2009 by admin
The Phelps Fire Department was dispatched early this morning for a reported chimney fire on south Marbletown Road.
Ontario County Sheriff’s Department arrived on scene within minutes and reported the side of the house fully involved, and the fire spread rapidly through the entire residence.
Command arrived on scene and reported the house fully engulfed. Mutual aid was requested from the Clifton Springs, Oaks Corners, & Marbletown Fire Departments. Photos at Phelps FD website

Mr. Storrs, you clearly have no concept of what happened at this Structure fire. There are two items we can agree on here.
1. Its a shame they lost their home.
2. Fortunately no one was hurt.
The rest of that comment by you is just false. 100% false. Unless you were there you cannot possibly know what happened and in what time it happened. Good luck listening to your trusty pager in the future Bub, but it failed you this time.
Firefighter Storrs:
In response to your comment, I will reply with facts, not uneducated guesses.
The dispatcher at the 911 center incorrectly dispatched the alarm originally, due to talking over the repeater. When asked to repeat the alarm, it was again dispatched incorrectly. Therefore, there was a delayed response, however it was not a half hour, it was 7 minutes. Engine 2131 was first apparatus on scene, long before Clifton Springs or Oaks Corners. A Sherriff arrived on scene within approximately 2 minutes of the dispatch, finding the house completely engulfed in flames.

Firefighter Storrs:
Storrs if you really are a firefighter somewhere you are very un educated and don’t have the slightest clue as to what goes on! Im an Ontario County Firefighter and was listening to it from my residence thats about 15 minutes from the Phelps Fire Dist! Phelps Engine 2131 did make a very timely response along with other apparatus from station 21! If the Phelps Fire Dept had to hire paid drivers you wouldn’t be able to afford the tax hike that would occur to pay them!!!
So i suggest if you really have a problem with what went on maybe you should join PFD. If you don’t want to do that maybe you should put some intelligent thought into the comments you post and appreciate the volunteers that work their buts off to provide fire and ems protection!
To my Brothers and Sisters of the Phelps Fire Department im sorry you have to deal with people like that!!!
Firefighter Storrs:
I normally would not respond to such forums as it usually creates more grief than good, however, I feel that you need to know the facts surrounding this incident.
Time of dispatch 01:21:48 FACT
Phelps 10-8 time 01:25:47 FACT
Phelps 10-97 time 01:27:23 FACT
Marbletown dispatch 01:30:30 FACT
CSFD and OCFD disp. 01:31:40 FACT
As stated before, it took several attempts to get the voice message from Ont. Cty. Dispatch due to our repeater. FACT
My message to you is to get your FACTS straight before publicly bashing a fellow firefighting agency or an agency for that matter. Just because we all can’t afford paid drivers like Geneva doesn’t make us any less of a department.
And furthermore, if you were one of my firefighters making comments such as yours, you can bet I would make you publicly apologize for such an ignorant rant.
Good luck as a firefighter.
Chief John Dole
Phelps Fire Dept.
Mr Storrs, Phelps Fire Department, like any department, is commited to providing the best protection to the community that they serve. As training officer of Phelps fire department I would like to invite you to speak/instruct at one of our training nights. We train every monday night. You seem to know every thing there is to know about fire fighting. So please feel free to stop in any Monday night.

I am deeply sorry, I did not mean it at all like that. I was not looking to make harm or anything…
Once again, I hope you accept my apology. I love the fire service, and would have never thought that I would do or say something to cause such a terrible mess.
I have learned a big lesson out of this my chief sat me down and talked with me about this, and I promised that this will never happen again.
I am sorry for all of the disruption and problems this has caused everyone! I hope you all can forgive me …
Mr Storrs,
Good of you to apologize. Remember, it is not our job as volunteers to critique and put down our neighbors. We all do this for the same reason…to help people and we all take pride in the jobs we do.
Mr. Storrs –
Based on the reaction of your initial comments, and knowing that a vast majority of the Ontario County and surrounding agencies’ firefighters read these forums and stories on this website, there are probably many, MANY more volunteer and career firefighters in numerous other agencies that are disgusted and appalled by your “observations”. I know I certainly am, and I am not with the Phelps Fire Department.
I’m proud to be a part of the fire services, respect my fellow firefighters and EMS providers, celebrate our successes and grieve our disappointments, no matter which department is involved… but NEVER would I chastize another department for information that you “perceive” or “guess at” what happened. YOU WEREN’T THERE… and if you think that sitting at home listening to a pager makes you an expert on firefighting responses, attacks and other tactical techniques… then I need to get out of this business. But I do not, because I, unlike you, never lose sight of the REAL reason we do what we do… to help our fellow man in their time of crisis.
Maybe you “learned a big lesson” when your Chief sat you down and “talked” with you about it… the next lesson you’re going to learn is to “love thy neighbor”, and ESPECIALLY, “respect thy brother firefighters”… it doesn’t matter whether they’re a career or volunteer, we ALL respond to the call for service. We ALL leave our families behind, at all hours of the day or night, to help complete strangers, our neighbors, our friends and our families when they need our assistance.
If you’ve paid attention, note that I have addressed you as “Mr. Storrs”, because in my eyes (and apparantly many others above), calling YOU a “Firefighter” is disrespectful to those who take pride in the service and have EARNED the title.
Good luck to you, son. You have certainly angered many more than those in the Phelps Fire Department.
