2008 9-11 Memorial Events Planned - Canandaigua

Canandaigua continues its tradition commemorating the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11th 2001 with a ceremony at the Commons Park in Downtown Canandaigua at 6:30PM on Thursday September 11th 2008.
Following the ceremony a silent emergency vehicle and marchers procession, joined by members of Freedom Walk, will proceed North on Main Street to the American Legion Post 256 for a candlelight memorial.

Robo Dog to help Fire Department - Hopewell

A federal grant helped the Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department adopt its newest member of the team, Sparky the Fire Dog.
Using the $11,454 grant from the federal Department of Homeland Security, the department purchased the robotic dog, complete with his own firetruck. The funds also helped pay for educational pamphlets and booklets, said Fire Department President David Van Troost. MPNNews Article
Hazardous Condition - Geneva

On 5 August 2008, the Geneva Fire Department dispatched Engine 1111 and Rescue 1171 to the boat docks near the Ramada Inn on Lakefront Drive for a sunken boat that was leaking fuel into the lake. The first arriving units found a mostly submerged boat with gasoline and oil leaking into the water. Firefighters used floating absorbent booms to minimize the spread of the petroleum products and the State Department of Environmental Conservation was requested to the scene. Mutual Aid Wayne County - Port Gibson

The Port Gibson Fire Department was dispatched early this morning to stand by at Palmyra Fire Department’s Station. While one engine crew and one tanker crew stood by on Palmyra’s floor. 3 members completed the crew on Palmyra’s second engine and responded to the scene. Once on scene, the Palmyra engine assisted in improving the water supply to Williamson’s Quint and protecting the Bank to the south of the blaze.
20 people were left homeless. No one was injured. Departments on scene included Marion, Williamson, Walworth and Palmyra. RNews Story
Mutual Aid Seneca County - Geneva

On 26 July 2008, the C.J. Folger Hook & Ladder Company of the Geneva Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the Village of Seneca Falls. While en route, the SFFD canceled Geneva’s truck company response, but requested a F.A.S.T. team response. The Hydrant Hose Company responded to this request with Engine 1112. When Geneva arrived on scene, multiple fire departments were work two structure fires, 7 Oxford St. and 32 Maple St., with live primary power lines arching on the ground.
Geneva firefighters provided FAST coverage at the Maple St. address until that fire was declared under control and then assisted with the basement fire on Oxford St. At least three people were transported to the hospital, a civilian and two firefighters.
The West Lake Road Fire Department provided standby coverage for the City of Geneva, and North Side Fire Department provided coverage for the Border City Fire Department. The Seneca County Fire Investigation Team is investigating the cause of both fires. Photos by GFD
Structure Fire - Canandaigua

The Canandaigua Fire Department was dispatched this morning to Green Street for a reported structure fire. Command reported a working fire and requested a ambulance to respond for numerous injured persons. In total, 5 persons were treated and transported to Strong Hospital in Rochester for burns and smoke inhalation.
The Cheshire Fire Department was requested to standby in Canandaigua’s station, and the County Air Truck 35 was also requested to the scene. The fire was quickly controlled.
Severe Storms

Ontario County was struck by some severe storms Thursday afternoon. Several Depts responded for storm calls. There was numerous street flooded with several roads closed in the Southern Ontario County area including Naples, South Bristol, southern portion of Canandaigua, Rushville and the southern portion of Gorham.
City of Canandaigua proposes to merge the Erina and Merrill Hose Companies

City of Canandaigua Fire Chief Matthew Snyder, acting as chairman of a fire study committee formed in April, presented a report with recommendations to rework the volunteer system. The fire study committee, made up of town and city officials as well as career and volunteer firefighters, is working toward a five-year plan it will present to the City Council in October of this year.
