No cuts in City Fire Department staffing - Canandaigua

Last night, the Canandaigua City Council’s finance committee voted down a proposal to reduce the number of on duty firefighters. Fire Chief Matthew Snyder also presented a plan for reorganizing the city fire department, based upon ideas from a committee comprised of career and volunteer firefighters, as well as city and town officials. The Recommedations were as follows:
- Encourage non-operational support from volunteers who aren’t actively fighting fires.
- Establish volunteer lieutenant position for volunteers with at least five years experience as active interior firefighter.
- Make gear and patches uniform for career and volunteer firefighters.
- Add a part-time volunteer coordinator to act as liaison between volunteers and chief.
- Establish an Explorer Post/Venture Crew to help 14- to 18-year-olds learn about firefighting.
- Put aside $5,000 of $7,000 in city funds given to both Erina and Merrill Hose companies for volunteer equipment and training, to be spent by the chief.
- Start a volunteer duty crew, in which volunteers are assigned shifts at the Fire Station.
Deer vs motorcycle MVA - Phelps

The Phelps Ambulance was dispatched early this morning to the NYS Thruway for a reported motorcycle vs. deer MVA. 1 Patient was transported via ground ambulance to Strong Hosptial. While enroute, the Phelp ambulance struck another deer, and was taken out of service, and the patient transfered to another ambulance.

MVA with Entrapment - Port Gibson

The Port Gibson Fire Department was dispatched this morning to State Rt 32 near the county line for a 1 car MVA.
Command reported 1 vehicle snapped a utility pole, and was into a tree with live wires still on the vehicle, and requested NYSEG and mutual aid.
Once NYSEG declared the scene safe, Port Gibson FD along with Clifton Springs and Palmyra FD’s extricated the driver. Patient was transported by Port Gibson ambulance with Finger Lakes ALS to the Firemans’ Field to be transfereed to Mercy Flight for air transport to Strong Hospital in Rochester.
Structure Fire - Richmond

The Richmond, Cheshire (auto mutual aid) and Bristol (auto mutual aid) Fire Departments were dispatched to County Rd 36 for a reported structure fire.
Command reported a working fire, and requested additional mutual aid from Naples, West Bloomfield and Atlanta (Stuben County). 1 female patient was transported from the scene with severe burns to her legs. MPNNews Article
MVA with Entrappment - Canandaigua

The Canandaigua Fire Department and Canandaigua Ambulance were dispatched this evening to Rts 5 & 20 in front of the Parkway Plaza for a reported head-on MVA.
Command reported a 2 car MVA with entrapment and requested Mercy Flight. 1 Patient was transported via Mercy Flight to Strong Hospital in Rochester, and 1 patient was transported via ground ambulance to Thompson Hospital.
Combine Fire - Farmington

The Farmington Fire Department responded to Collett Road for a report of a combine on fire in a field. Command reported a fire in the vehicle well off the road. Manchester FD was requested to stand-by for Farmington while they were working the incident.
Industrial Equipment fire - Clifton Springs

The Clifton Springs Fire Department responded this afternoon to the DL Ram corporation on Outlet Road for a report of a fire in a piece of industrial equipment. Command reported a fire in a tub grinder being used to grind wood, and requested Port Gibson to respond mutual aid. The fire was quickly extinguished.
Structure Fire - Geneva

The Geneva Fire Department was dispatched around 12:30 this morning to a reported Structure fire, on the corner of North St and North Exchange Streets in the City of Geneva.
Command reported a working fire at 14 N. Exchange street, and aggressive interior attack brought the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The West Bloomfield Fire Department regretfully announces the passing of life long firefighter and lifetime member of West Bloomfield Fire Department Russell Sage. Russell was a 50+ year member of the department.

Kays funeral home on Monroe St. Honeoye Falls, NY Service is at West Bloomfield Congregational church in West Bloomfield at 11am on Wednesday Oct. 8th. Manpower cuts in store for City of Canandaigua Fire Department ?

The Canandaigua City Council says the fire department needs to consider all its options to reduce overtime spending, which is estimated to be about $35,000 over budget this year. At a recent meeting, Fire Chief Matthew Snyder was askeed to look into cutting the number of firefighters on duty at all times as one step toward meeting the $115,000 allocated for overtime in the budget.
